High Speed FAQs
How fast is your high speed internet?
We offer speeds up to 2.5Mbps downstream and 500Kbps upstream.
How is it delivered?
Our high speed internet service is delivered wirelessly using the Motorola Canopy Wireless Broadband Platform. This allows us to provide a reliable connection in areas where wired broadband options may be unreliable or even non-existent.
Is this the same as "Wi-Fi"?
No. The term "Wi-Fi" typically refers to the common wireless technologies based on the IEEE 802.11 standard. Wi-Fi is what you find at most wireless "hot spots" at coffee shops, hotels, and other establishments. Our Motorola Canopy system is based on proprietary wireless technology that offers many advantages over traditional Wi-Fi.
Is it affected by the weather?
Not typically. The Motorola Canopy system is very good at maintaining quality connections in adverse weather.
How big is the Subscriber Module?
The Subscriber Module (SM) with integrated antenna is approximately 19.5" H x 12" W x 4.75" D.
If I rent a condo or apartment can I still get service?
Most of the time, yes. The FCC's rules for Over-the-Air-Reception Devices ("OTARD" Rules) prohibit restrictions on a tenant's right to install, maintain, or use an antenna to receive and transmit fixed wireless signals. This only applies to property that the tenant has exclusive use or control over, for instance: terraces, balconies, or patios. The OTARD Rules do not apply to common areas, which may include the roof or exterior walls of a multiple dwelling unit. The FCC Consumer Facts page provides more information on this topic.
Can a Homeowners' Association prevent me from getting service?
Not in most cases. The FCC's rules for Over-the-Air-Reception Devices ("OTARD" Rules) prohibit restrictions on a property owner's right to install, maintain, or use an antenna to receive and transmit fixed wireless signals. This only applies to property that they own or over which have exclusive use or control. The OTARD Rules do not apply to common areas, which may include the roof or exterior walls of a multiple dwelling unit. The FCC Consumer Facts page provides more information on this topic.
Do I have to purchase the Subscriber Module?
No. The subscriber module is provided as part of Mountain Internet's High Speed Internet Service for the duration of the service.
Do I need anything besides a computer?
Most installations require a broadband router. If you do not already have one they can be found at most major retailers for around $50. Please contact us if you have any questions about whether or not you will need a broadband router.
Does email come with your high speed internet service?
Yes. Our high speed internet service comes with 8 email addresses. This includes spam and virus protection for incoming email, access to our Web Mail client and POP3 servers.
Will it work with Mac or Linux?
Yes. Any modern network capable device should work just fine.
What about VoIP?
Yes. We currently have customers and even an employee who uses VoIP services such as Vonage without a problem.
Will game consoles work? What about latency?
Yes, any network capable gaming console will work. Additional latency due to being a wireless system is negligible and usually doesn't pose an issue.
Dial Up FAQs
How fast is dial up?
In theory dial up has a maximum speed of 56kbps, but typically only up to 53kbps is possible. Real life speeds will be lower, averaging 33-49kbps. Factors such as line noise and the quality of the modem contribute greatly to the speed of your connection.
What do I need for dial up service?
You will need a phone line and a computer with a modem. Most modern PCs come with modems, but if not one can be purchased at reasonable prices these days.
What is "accelerated" dial-up?
Our Accelerated Dial Up service can help to improve your online experience by utilizing a dial up connection more efficiently. It works by using a small program installed on your computer to connect to an accelerator service and perform selective compression, content caching and other network optimizations.
So accelerated dial up is a faster connection?
Not exactly. The connection itself is still a regular dial up connection, however the accelerator service can vastly improve the utilization of that connection, providing a much faster online experience.
Can the accelerator speed up everything?
Unfortunately it can not. It will work best with uncompressed content such as text and some images. Most multimedia content is already compressed and won't be directly affected by the accelerator. This means that doing something like visiting websites will be faster, but downloading a song or video will not be.
Where can I download the accelerator client?
You may download it here.
(Before installing please read the accelerator license agreement.)
Does email come with your dial up service?
Yes. Our dial up and accelerated dial up service comes with 3 email addresses. This includes spam and virus protection for incoming email, access to our Web Mail client and POP3 servers.
PC Repair & Virus Removal FAQs
How long does a repair take?
Our typical turnaround time is 1-2 days. The actual time varies depending on our workload, what the problem actually is and whether or not parts need to be ordered. If you are in need of expedited service let us know and we will see what we can do.
What is the actual cost of a typical repair?
We know the usual hourly rates for computer services can seem quite daunting. However most cleanup or repairs take about an hour. If you would like to find out more about the estimated cost of service or a repair, feel free to contact us for more information. Be sure to ask about our discount for current internet service customers!
What is this about a discount?
Our current internet service customers are entitled to a 20% discount on bench work such as PC repairs and maintenance. This does not apply to any parts that may be necessary.
Can you repair laptops?
Yes. In most cases, such as with software or virus problems, it does not matter if the PC is a laptop or desktop. However with certain physical or component damage, such as a broken screen, due to the nature of laptops they can be much more difficult and expensive to repair. If you have any questions about a particular problem, feel free to call us or stop by and we can take a look at it for you.
What do I need to bring in for a repair?
Typically you will just need to bring in your actual PC, sometimes called the "Tower" or "CPU". We have monitors, keyboards, mice and power cords on our workbench, so there is no need to drag all that along. If it is a laptop of course just bring in the whole thing along with the power adapter.
Can you do expedited repairs? What about overnight?
Being a small local business we have the advantage of being versatile. If you have an emergency and need repairs ASAP, just give us a call and we will see what we can do.
Home Networking FAQs
Can you setup wired and wireless networks?
Yes, we can do either.
Does the existing customer discount apply?
Unfortunately, because home networking involves onsite service we can not offer the discount for it.
How long does it take to setup a network?
It depends on quite a few things. If you have a wireless broadband router and would simply like us to set it up and connect a PC or two to it it wouldn't take long at all, maybe an hour. However something like a full-home wired network without any existing wiring would require much more time. If you are interested in examining the various options available we would be happy to go over them with you and help you pick one that fits your needs.
